Round Prairie

Round Prairie is a small, historical community located in northern Walker County, Texas, approximately 20 miles north of Huntsville, the county seat. It is one of several lesser-sized settlements in the county with roots dating back to the early years of Walker County's formation in the 1830s and 1840s, during the period of early Texas Republic-era colonization and land grants. Historical records list it alongside other minor communities such as Bath, Boswell, Crabbs Prairie, Goshen, Gourd Creek, Hawthorne, Loma, Moores Grove, Mossy Grove, Oak Grove, Pine Hill, Pine Prairie, Pine Valley, and San Jacinto. However, detailed historical accounts specific to Round Prairie are scarce, suggesting it was a dispersed rural area rather than a formalized town with significant infrastructure.

The area is characterized by rolling topography, wooded tracts with mature pines and hardwoods, sandy-loam soil, and abundant wildlife, including deer and hogs. It features Round Prairie Road (also referred to as Round Prairie Rd), a rural roadway providing access to properties and connecting to State Highway 75 (SH 75) about 1.8–2.8 miles away. The region is primarily used for residential, recreational, and agricultural purposes, with no evidence of incorporation, a post office, or major commercial development. Electricity and fiber optic internet are available along the road in some sections.

No dedicated Round Prairie Cemetery exists in Walker County; the nearest similarly named site is the Seale-Round Prairie Cemetery in Bald Prairie, Robertson County (adjacent to Walker County), which contains graves dating back to the 1870s and includes Civil War veterans.

Comprehensive lists of Walker County cemeteries do not include a Round Prairie-specific one, though nearby communities have sites like Black Jack Cemetery or others in Phelps and Dodge.

Note that Round Prairie in Walker County should not be confused with similarly named communities in other Texas counties, such as Navarro County (settled ~1900, population ~40, with a store and church)
or Lamar County (settled 1840s, population ~55, with historical churches and school).
